MinuteBots robotics team is on TV again

The MinuteBots robotics team of St. Paul’s Central High School has drawn a lot of press attention since it placed second in a regional competition, qualifying for an international competition and recently traveling to St. Louis for that event.

Tonight the MinuteBots were media darlings yet again, appearing in a Fox 9 News segment.

I’m a proud papa since, as shamelessly noted before, my son is one of the MinuteBots. More …

Central High students do Star Wars tunes

Student musicians at my son’s Central High School in St. Paul did a nice job playing a “Star Wars” medley at a recent concert, one of several held every school year.

Darth Vader voice: “Impressive. Most impressive.”

My violin-virtuoso son also played in the concert, but he was not among those doing the “Star Wars” arrangement.

Pity, because he’s a nerd off the old block. More …

Illness does not keep me from Comic Con

Against my better judgement, I covered Wizard World Minneapolis Comic Con for the Pioneer Press last weekend as I was coming down with a nasty cold.

The exertion required to take pictures and shoot video for hours may have set my recovery back several days — I did not feel up to snuff until Thursday or so.

Aw, hell, it was totally  worth it. More …

I talk G+ for journos on a Google Hangout

Untitled

How can journalists use the Google+ social network?

It’s definitely an underused online resource among reporters, which is a shame since I’ve found Google+ to be hugely useful in my work.

I discussed this as one of two guests (along with Google+ heavyweight Sarah Hill) on a Google Hangout hosted by PR NewsWire’s Profnet (with which I’m intimately acquainted). More …

Cosplayers … assemble! I visit Comic Con

20140503_165558
I went to Wizard World Minneapolis Comic Con today even though I have the mother of all colds because I wanted to get pictures of all the cosplayers … and I did.

See my photos here.

These are semi-crappy phone photos; the Pioneer Press’ John Autey took much nicer ones at a Comic Con preview event.

I do television and radio interviews with some regularity, and I enjoy none more than the ones I do with KLBB personality Karin Housley.

I was on her show again recently to discuss password utilities, iBeacon and other tech-related topics.

My exotic-fruit essay … now in print form

My passion for an exotic tropical fruit known as the quenepa recently found its way into a digital magazine called, fittingly, The Magazine, and edited by Glenn Fleishman.

Glenn has collected a number of the fantastic essays and articles from the various issues into a gorgeous hardcover book along with an e-book. My quenepa piece is not in the hardcover but it does show up in the e-book, which has a larger content assortment. More …

MinuteBots have adventure of a lifetime

IMG_0453
My son and his fellow Central High School robotics geeks recently attended the 2014 FIRST Robotics Competition in St. Louis after successfully crowdfunding the trip.

And while their MinuteBots team was not among the tournament winners, the teens had the adventure of a lifetime. This, thanks to my wife’s role as a trip chaperone and her discerning palate, included sushi and Peruvian food. More …

MinuteBots appear on KSTP-TV newscast

Central High School’s MinuteBots robotics team appeared on KSTP-TV News. Exciting! It was not the team’s first media appearance, either.

As I noted earlier, the MinuteBots (including my sophomore son) placed second in a regional competition in the Twin Cities, and are St. Louis-bound for an international competition if they can raise enough money for the trip.

They’re close. More …
