I join TUAW to list top apps, events

Untitled2

A tech journalist I admire, Michael Rose of the The Unofficial Apple Weblog, put together a podcast panel to go over the top Apple events and apps of the year … and I was on it! I was honored.

From the show notes:

‘Tis the season for wrapping up the year that was into a neat bundle of best-of reviews, and who are we to argue with tradition? More …

A colleague’s golf book is worth a look

ForeGoneCover

My illustrious tech-writer counterpart Jeff Carlson did me a solid yesterday in a personal-blog post that generously promoted the work of others —including mine — as well as his own.

As 2013 wraps up, and especially now that it’s a week before Christmas, I’m sure you’re getting pitches from all directions for products and services to spend your money on. I certainly am. More …

‘You have failed me for the last time …’

I sent out this all-newsroom e-mail to my St. Paul Pioneer Press colleagues today:

In the words of Darth Vader to one of his poorly performing Imperial Fleet underlings, “You have failed me for the last time.”

I’m referring to the pop machine on the skyway level, which has cheerfully accepted my legal tender without giving me anything in return — *again*

I swear, sometimes I think the machine is (expletive)ing with me. More …

Thank you, Minnov8 Gang, for having me on the podcast again … and for letting me plug my new book this time.

The infinite monkey theorem states that a monkey hitting keys at random on a typewriter keyboard for an infinite amount of time will almost surely type a given text, such as the complete works of William Shakespeare. What if there were a thousand monkeys? More …

My book ‘The Mobile Writer’ is out!

My latest book, The Mobile Writer, has just been released.

This is a how-to book for those who want to get real writing done on mobile devices (such as tablets), but don’t know how to do so effectively because they aren’t up to speed on the relevant tools.

I walk readers through the hardware options—iPad, Android, Chromebook, Surface and so on—and tell them about writing apps and accessories, such as Bluetooth keyboards. More …

Minnov8 and I go all ‘Minority Report’

I was again a guest host on the fab Minnov8 Podcast. Discussions this time included Google Chromebooks and Apple’s “Minority Report”-like iBeacon technology.

In the Tom Cruise movie Minority Report, there is this minute long scene where Cruise’ character, Chief John Anderton, is called by name as he walks down a corridor filled with ads. In this show we discuss our local retailers and the holiday season, but then move in to Apple’s iBeacon technology, which promises to get us closer than ever to Minority Report’s vision of a future adscape.
