I speak at Social Media Breakfast

I am shown here at the Social Media Breakfast – Minneapolis/St. Paul #52 event at CoCo Minneapolis on Dec. 21. (The pictures were just posted on SMBMSP’s Facebook page.)

In the shots where I’m speaking, I’m singing the praises of one of the panelists, Angie Davis, who runs the fantastic Byrd & Belle maker of laptop and iOS-device protectors.

Happy to appear in The Magazine

I’m insanely excited to have an essay in the latest issue of The Magazine, the fledgling (but already popular) iOS-based e-magazine founded by Marco Arment and edited by Glen Fleishman.

This is one of favorite writing assignments ever. I don’t do a ton of freelance writing, but I had vowed to become a Magazine contributor. I’ve pulled this off sooner than I expected, and I couldn’t be happier.

Shown above is the tropical fruit known as the quenepa (or the mamoncillo). It’s my favorite fruit, and a focus of my essay.

As such, it is the culmination of a nearly lifelong writing aspiration. I had wanted for decades to write about the quenepa, but never got around to it … nor found a good venue for the topic. The Magazine is the perfect one!

I’m spotted in old documentary

There was a bit of a commotion in my living room when my wife and son spotted an old, old St. Paul Pioneer Press byline of mine (from the 1980s).

It appeared on a local public-television documentary (about porn palaces of the inner city, of all things).

That’s my “maiden” name, before my wife and I married and tacked each other’s names onto our own.

Video of me … caught on camera

When I recently posted a video of myself trying out a Mall of America flight simulator, my friend Jenedee Canino Miller played the video on her iPad … and took pictures, which she put on Facebook 🙂

I admit Mom into AeroPress cult

I adore the AeroPress, as do virtually all other coffee lovers I introduce to this minimalist, non-electronic, non-mechanical maker of espresso-like joe.

My mother is one such convert, but she recently needed a bit of guidance. So I shot this demo, then got on Google Voice with her while she played the footage on her iMac. Our recorded chat became the video’s voice-over narration.

In this video, I demonstrate the two ways I use my beloved AeroPress. The first method is for my wife’s morning coffee, the second for my (stronger) cup.

I talk gadgets at a local meetup

I joined fellow gadget geek Breon Nagy to talk (what else?) gadgets at this month’s installment of Java Meetup 612, co-hosted by Joel Carlson and Erica Hanna Mayer (who took these photos and gave me permission to repost them).

Crashed Ice is now video game!

Red Bull Crashed Ice is now a video game.

The downhill-ice-skating event, which was a downtown-St. Paul sensation last winter and returns this winter, has inspired an Xbox Live Arcade title that makes use of the Kinect motion-sensing gear.

I filmed myself playing the game (badly) and put together this video, which includes live Crashed Ice footage shot by Ben Garvin of the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

More info here.
