My little tech blog gets a big press award

A15T1388-2

My Pioneer Press tech blog won a 2014 Page One Award for “best newsroom blog” from the Minnesota chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, as I noted in an earlier post.

What I didn’t know then: whether I would place first, second or third in the category.

Now I do: I was bested by Minnesota Public Radio’s Bob Collins and his fab NewsCut blog for the top spot.

A geek-cool weekend spent at Comic Con

Screen Shot 2015-05-05 at 6.24.00 PM

As a guy who grew up on a steady diet of science-fiction novels and superhero comics, I was thrilled to hit Wizard World Comic Con in Minneapolis (twice) over the weekend.

The Minneapolis con, which debuted in 2014, is among a series of Wizard World Comic Con events held around the country. These are similar to (but not affiliated with) bigger and better-known cons like San Diego Comic-Con International.

Ignite a topic on today’s Minnov8 podcast

julios-steroids-740x400

I was a guest host on today’s installment of the Minnov8 Gang Podcast, which focused to a large extent on this week’s Ignite Minneapolis multi-speaker event.

I once spoke at Ignite, and Minnov8’s Steve Borsch had fun with that in the episode artwork.

Me as Dick Tracy wearing an Apple Watch

unnamed

Just for fun, I had my cartoonist buddy David Steinlicht draw me as Dick Tracy with an Apple Watch.

I had planned to use the cartoon with a review of the Apple Watch, but since I didn’t buy one and an Apple review unit will be longer in coming than anticipated, I’m sharing David’s artistic wizardry with you now.

When my wife and I popped into a SmashBurger joint the other day, we were surprised and excited to see WCCO-TV’s Jason DeRusha there filming one of his DeRusha Eats segments.

A local journo, and a blast from my past

When I was Puerto Rican kid and obsessively devoted to my collection of science-fiction novels, I would create paper bookplates with my personal details along with drawings of zooming spaceships, planetary panoramas and the like.

I carefully attached the ex libris slips to the insides of the books’ front covers, and I felt a swelling of geeky pride at having enhanced my beloved library so.

I had forgotten all about the bookplates until, to my shock, I found myself staring at one of them this week … in a tweet.

My tech blog wins an SPJ Page One prize

Screen Shot 2015-04-18 at 9.04.08 AM

My work-related Your Tech Weblog technology blog has garnered a Page One award in the “best newsroom blog” category from the Minnesota chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

I will find out next month whether I placed first, second or third in the category … but I am beyond thrilled regardless.

I have been doing my tech blog for a long time, but the MNSPJ’s newsroom-blog category is a relatively new one, and this news-industry recognition means a lot.

I join Minnov8 Gang Podcast at MinneBar

not-an_main

I’ve been on the Minnov8 Gang podcast a bunch in recent years, but it’s usually via Skype. I have not done this in the flesh for a long time.

So it was a pleasure and an honor to join Steve Borsch, Graeme Thickins and Phil Wilson during Minnebar at Best Buy headquarters today.

As an alumnus of St. John’s University, the central-Minnesota institution run by Benedictine monks, I am perpetually in awe of the school’s Abbey Church.

Five Sundays, five biz cover stories by me

Screen Shot 2015-03-19 at 10.45.38 PM

As a technology writer on the Pioneer Press’ business desk, I’ve been on a bit of a hot streak in recent weeks.

Each Sunday newspaper has a standalone business section with a full-color cover. Each of those covers has a lengthy lead story.

For five weeks in a row, I wrote that lead story.

I’m on Fast Horse tech and media panel

CAfbgZOUIAAipor (1)

What goes around, comes around.

An eon ago (well, it was 2008), I had the honor of speaking at the Fast Horse marketing agency in Minneapolis (see photos below).

The topic was the then-shiny-new Twitter. The occasion was my new (and first) book, “Twitter Means Business.”

“Despite massive stage fright,” I said in a post, which shows me clutching a pop for dear life, “I enjoyed this immensely.”

Fast-forward to the present, and I again got invited to be a speaker at Fast Horse (this time in my role as a Pioneer Press tech writer).
